My Guide to the Amalfi Coast
The Amalfi Coast is a stunning stretch of coastline in southern Italy, known for its picturesque towns, dramatic cliffs, and crystal-clear waters. Located in the Campania region, the Amalfi Coast is a popular destination for tourists from all over the world.
The Amalfi Coast stretches along the southern coast of the Sorrentine Peninsula, and it is home to some of the most beautiful towns in Italy, including Amalfi, Positano, Ravello, and Sorrento. Each of these towns has its unique charm and attractions, but they all share the same breathtaking scenery and Mediterranean lifestyle.
If you are planning your trip to the Amalfi, here are the 5 things I wish I knew before my visit:
Plan your trip in advance: The Amalfi Coast is a popular destination, and accommodations can fill up quickly during peak seasons. Be sure to book your accommodations well in advance, especially if you plan to visit during the summer months.
Consider staying in a smaller town: While towns like Amalfi and Positano are popular tourist destinations, they can also be crowded and expensive. Consider staying in a smaller town like Praiano or Atrani, which offer a more authentic experience and are often more affordable. I was lucky enough to get a reservation at Hotel le Fioriere in Praiano, a quaint town in the southern region. Although Praiano is not the most popular town amongst tourists in the Amalfi, I found it to be much more local and relaxing than its neighboring town of Positano. If you want a quieter vacation that is still close to main attractions and beaches, I would highly recommend having Praiano be your home base. If you have a bigger budget to spend, Casa Angelina is a brand new exclusive luxury hotel with stunning architecture and views of the coastline located in Praiano. The prized jewel of this hotel is the private terrace filled with lemon trees, and a shimmering pool overlooking the sea where you can spend the afternoon under the sun.
Use public transportation: Driving along the Amalfi Coast can be challenging due to narrow roads and traffic. Instead, use public transportation such as buses or ferries to get around. Not only is it more convenient, but you'll also get to enjoy the stunning coastal views without the stress of driving. If you opt to use the bus system, check the SITA SUD website for the daily schedule and acquire tickets through most any Tabacchi shop in town. At these shops, there will be signs that say BUS TICKETS SOLD HERE and there you will be able to buy a single or multituse ticket for anywhere along the Amalfi Coast!
Pack comfortable shoes: The Amalfi Coast is full of stairs and steep paths, so make sure to pack comfortable shoes with good grip. Sneakers or hiking boots are a great choice for exploring the many walking paths along the coast, including the infamous Path of the Gods. The Path of the Gods is a famous hiking trail that offers stunning views of the coast and the sea. The trail starts in the town of Agerola and ends in Nocelle, a small village above Positano and stretches high above the coastline where you can enjoy breathtaking views along the way and stop in the coastal towns below.
Try the local cuisine: The Amalfi Coast is famous for its fresh seafood and locally grown produce. Make sure to try some of the local specialties, such as spaghetti alle vongole (spaghetti with clams) and limoncello, a lemon liqueur made with locally grown lemons.
Now that you are a little more familiar with this beautiful coastline and how to make the most of your stay, here are my top rated activities to do during your stay on Amalfi.
Here are my favorite things to do in the Amalfi Coast:
Visit the towns along the coast: The Amalfi Coast is known for its charming towns, each with its own unique character. Take a stroll through the colorful streets of Positano, visit the historic town of Amalfi, or explore the lesser-known fishing village of Cetara.
Enjoy the beaches: The Amalfi Coast is home to several stunning beaches, from the lively Marina Grande beach in Positano to the secluded Furore beach, nestled between cliffs. Spend a day soaking up the sun and swimming in the crystal-clear waters.
Take a boat tour: One of the best ways to experience the beauty of the Amalfi Coast is by boat. Take a tour around the coast, stopping at hidden coves and grottos, and enjoying the views of the colorful towns from the sea.
Take a coastal drive in a vintage car: My absolute FAVORITE thing I did in the Amalfi Coast was booking a tour with Ciao Vintage Italy, to enjoy the real italian experience onboard the iconic Fiat 500. On this tour, a driver will pick you up from your hotel in their vintage Fiat and take you along the scenic route of the coastline stopping in picture worthy destinations and sharing their passion and insight about Italy with you. This tour was fun, enlightening and so unique and will make you want to make a home in this beloved country of pasta and wine.
These are just a few of the many things to do in the Amalfi Coast. Whether you're looking for relaxation, adventure, or culture, there's something for everyone in this beautiful part of Italy! Remember to plan ahead, enjoy the coastline by boat or vintage car, and experience life the Italian way.
